The Short Answer
For a first visit, stay in the Canal Ring, ideally around the Nine Streets, or in the Jordaan just west of it. You can walk to Dam Square, the Anne Frank House and most museums, and you wake up on a canal. Then match the rest to your trip:
- Want to be in the middle of everything: the Old Center around Dam Square and the Spui. Avoid the Red Light District streets if you sleep lightly.
- Arriving by train or taking day trips: stay near Centraal Station, where the Schiphol trains, trams, metro and ferries all meet.
- Food, markets and a local feel: De Pijp, around the Albert Cuyp Market, or Oud-West by De Hallen.
- Museums and parks: the Museum Quarter, between the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark.
- More space for your money: Oost or Noord, a tram, metro or free ferry ride from the center.
- A trade fair or business trip: Zuid, by the RAI and the Zuidas. For a very early flight, stay at Schiphol.
Whatever you choose, read the room details. Many central hotels are in old canal houses with steep stairs, no lift and small rooms, and a room over a busy street can be loud until late.
Choose Your Neighborhood

Amsterdam's Neighborhoods Compared
| Neighborhood | Best for | Watch out for | To the center |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canal Ring | First visits, canal views, shopping | Steep stairs, small rooms | Walk |
| Jordaan | Quiet canals, cafés, Anne Frank House | Few hotels, tiny rooms | Walk |
| Old Center | Sights, nightlife | Crowds and late noise | You're in it |
| Centraal Station | Trains, day trips, short stays | Busy, touristy streets | Walk |
| De Pijp | Food, markets, bars | Busy market streets | Metro, tram or walk |
| Museum Quarter | Museums, Vondelpark | Quiet at night | Tram or walk |
| Oud-West | Local life, food hall | Few big-name hotels | Tram or bike |
| Oost | Parks, zoo, families | Further from the canals | Tram or metro |
| Noord | Views, space, creative spots | Depends on ferry or metro | Free ferry or metro |
| Zuid | RAI, business, Schiphol trains | Office district feel | Metro or tram |
Most visitors get around on foot, by tram or by bike. The central neighborhoods sit inside or just outside the ring of canals, so the further out you stay, the more you will use public transport.

Canal Houses: Stairs, Small Rooms and Noise
Staying in a 17th-century canal house is the classic Amsterdam experience, but these buildings were built narrow and tall. Expect steep, tight staircases, and check whether there is a lift before you book: some small hotels, such as the Amsterdam Wiechmann and Hotel Clemens, have none, while Hotel Estheréa has lifts to every room. Rooms are often smaller than in modern hotels, and the cheapest ones may face a courtyard or have no view at all.
Noise depends on the street. Rooms over tram lines, the Damrak, Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein or the Red Light District can be loud until late. If you sleep lightly, ask for a room at the back, or stay in the Jordaan, the Museum Quarter or Oost.
Book These Ahead
- The Anne Frank House sells tickets only online, each for a fixed time slot, and not at the door. New tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10 am Central European Time for visits six weeks later.
- The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum both sell timed tickets online. Book a start time before you go.
- King's Day (April 27, or April 26 when the 27th is a Sunday) brings over a million people onto the streets and canals, and hotels fill early. The Amsterdam Dance Event does the same every October.
Taxes and Getting In from Schiphol
Amsterdam charges a tourist tax of 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, for 2026. It is added on top of the room rate, so check the total before you pay.
Trains from Schiphol, from the station under the terminal, reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 15–17 minutes and run frequently. Direct trains to Amsterdam Zuid take under 10 minutes, and bus 397 runs to Museumplein and Leidseplein without a change. See our Schiphol guide for airport hotels.
